SINEAD O'CONNOR: I'M NOT BOSSY, I'M THE BOSS - Stocki's Summer Listening #3
07/09/2014
Sinead O'Connor is always original and provocative and has that amazing voice that can never really go wrong. The lead off single, Take Me To Church, really took my attention this summer and is one of my songs of the year so far. I love it! The album didn’t quite live up to the brilliance of that song but it still has some classic O’Connor. For me the other highlights are James Brown and Streetcars, the former all soul and the latter all melancholy. Both are different but powerful showcases for that voice! My disappointment has more to do with substance than sound. Most of the songs are on the politics of love and sex and I think Sinead would like to see herself as the sensual songstress but her fellow country woman Mary Coughlan has that niche all sown up with what feels like a lot more authenticity than Sinead. Having said that O’Connor’s honesty is always to be applauded and her wrestling with her role as a woman is a fascinating study in the wider gender debate!
