It was interesting to see the Orange Order invite Michael D. Higgins to the Orange parade in Donegal next year. I suspect he will accept the invitation: Certainly the press across the border are rather less free with the contempt and bigotry when it comes to reporting on working-class unionists... perhaps more than loyalism needs to re-route itself?

Unfortunately, I don't see any sign of bourgeois NI treating the loyalist underclass (and in fact unionists in general) as anything other than a bunch of scumbags who deserve nothing but harsh treatment and hateful comments. When watching and listening to the new ruling class pass judgement on these people I'm reminded of the old "plus ca change" adage... deeply depressing!

Perhaps it's time to give love and understanding a try? Lecturing themmuns on how bad and wrong they are hasn't worked in the history of humanity; it's not going to work now. If the change we seek isn't merely a different flavour of injustice then we need to see genuine love and understanding for our Orange/Unionist/Loyalist neighbours, to come alongside rather than seek to control.

As an organisation, the Orange Order is something I have profound and existential difficulties with (they're in plenty of company on that score!). But the crude attempts to denigrate and de-humanise ordinary, powerless people leave me cold - and concerned about the kind of society that's being engineered for us.
