Excellent piece ... if only it were heeded, understood, believed and lived out by those who claim to be followers

Simon

I apologise in advance if I have not got all the facts straight, and I hope someone will gracefully correct me if that is the case.

To me the mervyn / Gerry thing is indefensible, as it is a direct attack on a specific person. I can't even see how anyone could formulate a rational defence of it.

However what pastor McConnell said about Islam was true, it is not of God, hence Satanic - has to be one or the other. However I think this truth was not spoken in love.

There should have been a robust framework put in place in the sermon talking about the depravity of all, and how fundamentally followers of Islam are no different to anyone else. Then the equal justice, compassion, love, mercy and grace of God towards all these people should be highlighted. And what Jesus did on the cross ought to be central to the message, salvation as the free gift of a God to all who trust and believe.

Next the problems with polytheism should be addressed, and the eternally misleading nature of Islam explored. Finally, the Christian's reaction to all of this should be explored. The Christian ought to love his Muslim neighbour as himself, lay down his rights and life for his neighbour, and spend himself on seeking ways to love and serve his neighbour.

The pastor got one aspect of this right, and omitted to mention all the others. We have a duty to speak the truth, but to do that in love

Simon, thank you for your illuminating comments, which I passionately agree with.

The Lord's command to, "love the sinner and despise the sin" (excuse my précis), is surely fundamental to this debate. Being aware of the persecution of Christians, simply because of their faith, by Islamic regimes, cannot be excluded in any overall view on the subject.

I respect all opinions expressed by my Christian brothers & sisters, knowing they do so in Christian love and their own understanding... "righteous anger" is a fact of human life which we all know very well, please let's not confuse the "individual with the belief system".

'to follow Jesus is what makes us Christian'...really? I follow Christ because I am a Christian, not because it makes me Christian.

Would you consider not using the term 'Jesus' so much? The apostles and disciples never spoke with such casualness. He is referred to as 'Jesus', but rarely if ever addressed as 'Jesus'.
