Alan

Thanks for the thoughts. It is very difficult to understand what is going on and particularly perplexing when one lives here. It is certainly not a simple matter. Apartheid was a devilish invention, but it introduced very little that was not already present. It institutionaised, legitimized and reinforced evils that were already present. It subjected a community to a high level of violence, but that was not unusual in the colonial or even per-colonial era. Those who suffered the greatest violence by staying within the country during apartheid seem to have become the greatest leaders most opposed to violence. The greatest violence seems to be that of black on black. In this case two largely black unions fighting and turning on a largely black and black controlled police force. In our area at least the greatest violence under apartheid seems to have been the tribal IFP/ANC conflict. Somehow extreme violence, to the point of murder, seems to have become embedded in our society. I have no idea how or when that happened, but I suspect it is the result of several factors over many centuries.
Those are my thoughts and I claim no authority for them. It is funny how I find I know so much less about the situation in this country the longer I live here! It was all so obvious and simple when I was reading the Guardian in the students' union!
