Love this! Rave on!

I think you're onto something with this language of "the gut" here, Steve.

I think that speaking about "the gut" gets us past boring old "head vs heart" metaphors of the past. I think that the average male in particular finds it hard to relate to both sides of the old image - we're put off by the stuffy intellectualism of "living in your head", and we don't really relate to the feminine sentimental approach of "trusting your heart". (Perhaps this is part of why the percentage of men in churches is quite low, and those that are there tend to be the quiet reflective types).

But "listening to your gut" is something a man can relate to. The gut holds it all together - its actually attached to both the heart and the head, but gives you the conviction to put your feet on the street and follow the dream.

A few years ago, when I was learning about decision making in the tradition of Ignatian Spirituality, my spiritual director told me that decision making was all about listening to your gut (which she told me meant using my head, but being prepared to trust my feelings). Sound advice, I've always felt.

(and I'm sure that women may also be able to relate!)
