I have to say that I expected The Head and The Heart to blow every other record out of the water this year and land firmly in Stocki’s very favourite of the year. Their last album Let’s Be Still made such an impact but was discovered too late for the honour of a Top 20 placing in 2013.
When Signs Of Light came it was good but not as great as I had anticipated. That doesn’t mean it shouldn't sit proudly in my Top 10. All We Ever Knew kicks it all off with those same effortless, near floating melodies that drew me in when I first heard the band at Calvin College in 2014. Rhythm and Blues is maybe my favourite here while The Colours hypnotises and the serene then soaring closing Signs Of Light is a stunning piece of beauty.
The reviewers were pretty harsh on Signs Of Light blaming a major label signing sending the band too commercial. That’s not my take. In the end all the catchy beauty of their previous records Let’s Be Still and their eponymous debut, that I loved so much, are still here. Maybe it was because I hadn’t seen it live that it didn’t find the traction of the other records. Or perhaps by half way through 2017 I’ll think this is just as good. It has all the potential to change my mind on its placing!
